Overview

James W. Ehrman is Of Counsel in the Litigation and Creditor & Debtor Rights groups at McCarthy Lebit with a legal practice focused on matters arising from troubled commercial and financial relationships. For more than four decades he has helped businesses, financial institutions, fiduciaries, and other stakeholders navigate complex insolvency matters, providing strategic guidance through financially distressed situations and commercial disputes.

James represents court-appointed receivers, trustees, secured and unsecured creditors, lenders, owners, purchasers of distressed assets, and other parties involved in bankruptcy and receivership proceedings. His practice includes Chapter 7, Chapter 11, and Chapter 15 bankruptcy matters, fraudulent transfer litigation, involuntary bankruptcy proceedings, non-dischargeability actions, and complex insolvency disputes. Known for his thoughtful and practical approach, James enjoys developing creative legal strategies to resolve challenging issues that arise during reorganizations and restructurings.

Throughout his career, James has represented clients in a wide variety of complex bankruptcy, receivership, and commercial litigation matters involving businesses across numerous industries. His experience includes advising domestic and international clients in cross-border insolvency proceedings, guiding businesses through successful reorganizations and asset acquisitions, and representing lenders, creditors, fiduciaries, equity owners, and receivers in high-stakes financial disputes. Whether serving as counsel to stakeholders or as a court-appointed fiduciary, James is committed to developing practical, business-focused solutions that help clients achieve favorable outcomes in challenging circumstances.

James is an active member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, where he remains engaged in the legal community and the ongoing development of bankruptcy and commercial law.

After receiving his Bachelor of Arts from Harvard College, James went on to earn his Juris Doctor from the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School.
